Home of the Week: Keeping up with ‘The Joneses’ at The Dudley Mansion

Historic descriptions of the lavish parties that were once regular occurrences at the ‘Dudley Mansion‘ seem more like the best scenes from the “Great Gatsby” than actual real soirees. We’re not sure if F. Scott Fitzgerald was inspired by the parties at 400 South Front Street, but our newest ‘Home of the Week‘ is one of the most well known and historically significant mansions of the South.

Built in 1825 by the first elected Governor of North Carolina Edward B. Dudley, this 10,000 square foot home is located in the heart of the Wilmington Historic District and features sweeping views of the Cape Fear river and an acre of grounds and gardens perfect for entertaining or relaxation.

In the late 1800s, the 5 bedroom and 3 full bath jewel of a home was sold to Pembroke and Sarah Jones who were millionaire investors and entrepreneurs with a penchant for luxurious living and sharing their home with friends. Local legend has it that their “get together’s” at the mansion were so lavish and exquisite that the saying “keeping up with the Joneses” was coined!

In 2005 the estate underwent a massive restoration that maintained the Dudley Mansion’s old world charm and history while infusing it with a breath of 21st century modern luxury. The home has had some extremely famous and historical figures walk its halls and enjoy the grounds; such as: The Roosevelts, President Taft and Woodrow Wilson just to name a few!

Listed by Jessica Riffle Edwards for $1,249,000, this property is every bit as grand and breathtaking as it was when Governor Dudley built it all those years ago. Join Jessica on a video tour of our ‘Home of the Week’ and click here if you’d like to see photos of this truly awesome home. We’re excited to see who will write the next chapter in this home’s classic American story.
